SCENT + ART

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about making perfume with the Scent + Art Signature Collection.

The Kit

What's included in the Scent + Art perfume making kit?

The Signature Collection includes six premium fragrance oils (Citrus, Salt, Calm, Sugar, Woods, Clean), three 50ml frosted glass spray bottles, perfumer's alcohol, a pipette, and four tested recipe cards with exact drop ratios and step-by-step instructions.

What type of oils come in the kit — essential oils or fragrance oils?

Fragrance oils — cosmetic-grade, the same category professional perfumers use for wearable, alcohol-based fragrance. They're more stable on skin, longer-lasting, and purpose-built for perfume performance. Most DIY kits use essential oils, which behave differently and tend toward aromatherapy rather than wearable fragrance.

Can I make more than one perfume from a single kit?

Yes. One kit contains enough oil and alcohol to fill all three bottles using the tested recipes, plus additional material to experiment with your own ratios.

Do you offer refills or individual oils?

Not yet — we're testing refill packs now. Join the list and we'll email you first.

Making Perfume

Do I need any experience to make perfume with this kit?

No experience required. The four recipe cards include precise drop counts and step-by-step instructions. Follow a tested recipe on your first attempt, then experiment freely — the six oils are curated to blend well together regardless of the ratios you choose.

What's the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils?

Essential oils are extracted directly from plants. They're more volatile, degrade faster on skin, and many are photosensitizing (bergamot, lime, citrus varieties). Fragrance oils are cosmetic formulations designed specifically for alcohol-based perfumes — they perform more consistently, last longer on skin, and blend more predictably.

Can I customize the recipes or create my own blends?

Yes. The four recipes are starting points. You can adjust ratios, combine notes from different recipes, or freestyle entirely. The six oils were chosen to work in any combination.

My perfume doesn't smell right fresh out of the bottle — is that normal?

Completely normal. Fresh blends often smell raw or sharp before they rest. Cap your bottle and leave it for 24–48 hours — this is called macerating. The notes will meld and the fragrance will balance. Most blends improve significantly after resting.

Wear + Storage

How long will my homemade perfume last on skin?

4–6 hours on most skin. Denser blends (Woods-heavy, Sugar-heavy) tend to last longer. Apply to pulse points for best projection.

What's the shelf life of the finished perfume?

12–18 months when stored away from direct sunlight and heat. The frosted glass bottles provide UV protection, which significantly extends shelf life versus clear plastic.

Are the fragrance oils safe for skin?

Yes. All six fragrance oils are cosmetic-grade and skin-safe at the concentrations used in the recipes. Finished perfumes are sprayed on skin, not worn neat. If you have known fragrance sensitivities, patch-test on a small area first.

Gifting + Shipping

Is the Scent + Art kit a good gift?

Yes. The kit arrives in a rigid gift box with foam insert — already gift-ready. Hand it over as-is. It suits fragrance lovers, creative hobbyists, and anyone who enjoys hands-on experiences. Digital gift cards are also available if you'd prefer the recipient to choose.

Does the kit ship gift-ready?

It ships in its own gift box with foam insert. There's no separate "gift wrap" option because the packaging is already the gift presentation. It arrives ready to give.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes. All orders ship free within the United States with tracking included.

How long does shipping take?

Orders are fulfilled within 1–2 business days from Warren, Michigan. Standard delivery is typically 3–5 business days after fulfillment.
